I’m planning a trip out there and I want to go as cheaply as possible. Things add up really quickly. I’m wondering if anyone has any secrets of how to get better rooms for less, which days to check in, how to get upgrades, etc.?
The days of a cheap Las Vegas vacation are gone, my friend. At least they are if you insist on staying, eating, shopping, and entertaining yourself on The Strip. Your best bet for saving money is to stay Downtown or in one of the many fine neighborhood style hotel/casinos like Santa Fe Station, Boulder Station, or Orleans. Yes, you’ll have to rent a car but I always look at it this way… you can stay 3 nights at $200 a night on The Strip or you can stay 3 nights at $50 a night off The Strip and take that extra $450 you’re saving to rent a car, see a show, have a nice meal or three, and fan yourself with the stack of bills left over.
Flexibility is the key… if you can go during the week (Sun-Thu) you will usually pay less. If you can go in August or just before Christmas you will pay less (slower during those times). Check several different dates and you will find wildly different rates for the exact same room, so the more options you have the better you’ll be able to do.
Make sure you are signed up for every players’ club in town - you can often get room discounts through them - most have online sign-up so go to the websites for each major casino.
Upgrades… you can try the $20 check-in trick… where you put a $20 bill on the desk in front of the agent and ask if they have any upgraded rooms available. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t.
As far as free… there are plenty of free or very low cost amusements like the Bellagio Fountains, Fremont Street Experience, and more - you just have to do a little research on any Vegas travel planning website.
